Many thanks to those who helped me find the 2nd Reality demo. FYI - I
finally located it at ftp.uwp.edu in the /pub/msdos/demos/alpha/0-9
directory.
I also appreciate the advice on ftp'ing - but I do know the difference
between a binary and an ASCII transfer. I don't know what the problem
is with my connection to epas, but I think I'm going to just go to orst
from now on.

Subject: 2nd Reality .S3Ms
For those of you who couldn't get 2nd Reality to work on your PC, you can still
listen to the music. On ftp.uwp.edu : incoming/demos/ASM-93/2nd_s3m.arj ,
contains the S3Ms from the demo. You will need a S3M player such as S3MPLAY
found on epas (in the pub/pc/ultrasound/sounds/utils I think). Note that one of
the S3Ms is 600k+ and S3Mplay runs out of memory (even with 625k free!), to get
around this you can either find another s3m player or diskedit the file to
reduce it's size (thus missing a little bit of the music).
If someone would like to tell me of an s3m player that can handle a file of this
size I'd be grateful, also any idea on how to convert s3m to an editable format
eg. ultratracker,669 etc?

Wow, I haven't posted for ages.
Question:
To run a CD-ROM off the GUS, do you need the daughterboard? If so, is it
available yet, and if that's so, does anyone know of a British supplier?
I'm thinking of buying one, but know very little about them.

Are you using binary mode for the transfers? Most people from the states
seem to be able to ftp from Epas without any problems.

The long Windows load time is due to the GUS driver verifying each patch
in ultrasnd.ini. The new Windows driver will let you disable this
verification process to reduce load time.
The pauses when playing AVI can be eliminated (for some people, at least)
by putting the GUS on an 8-bit DMA channel instead of a 16-bit one.

Actually, the 16k Ultramid is the same as Ultramid 1.02, only PKLITEd.
I don't know why certain people are having problems with loading
Ultramid, though.

You must put your GUS on port address 220h for Syndicate to detect it. The
game defaults to 220h and is supposed to parse an /iio<address> switch for
cards not at 220h but there seems to be a bug in how that switch is processed,
rendering it sort of useless. So, essentially, GUS and SB owners alike have
to put their soundcards on 220h.
Syndicate also defaults to IRQ 7, but, fortunately, it handles the /iirq<n>
switch properly. So, just put your GUS on port 220h, and run the game
using 'main /iirq5' or edit synd.bat to read the same.

Yes, I managed to get it to run. Seeing as how many programs these days
don't like memory mangers (such as Comanche Maximum Overkill), I have a
"himem.sys" configuration installed (DOS 6.0 of course). Whenever I need
to use it, I just select "NoQemm" from my configuration menu at startup.
Of course, when I tried to run the demo at first, it complained about
needing more memory, so I made up yet another menu configuration called
"NoFrills" which does not load my mouse driver. That gave the required
memory, and the demo then ran as it was supposed to.

I don't know how it sounds on the UltraSound (since my GUS is still in my
flatmate's 486), but on my PAS16, it sounds like one would expect a crappy
soundblaster to be like. I doubt that the GUS would be any better, because
in my opinion, the musical score for this demo is utter crap anyway. The
graphics are pretty good in places, but the music really doesn't fit at all.
If you just have a clean system at boot up, the demo will run with little
difficulty. If you do not already have multiple configuations with your
startup, then you may not want to bother. The demo is not that good.

MPEG audio is a bit processor intensive. I think (correct me here) that the
Xing decodeer just turns it into a .WAV.
I have thought of getting a Sigma "ReelMagic" card (SoundBlaster, 30fps MPEG
decoding, 16-bit MPEG audio decoding), but don't know if it would conflict
with my already hacked up setup.
On another note: I was looking closly at my 2.2 GUS, and if I'm not
mistaken, the "daughterboard" plugs are just straight extentions of the 16-bit
ISA bus. If this is true, I vote somebody developed an FM chipset, not for
people like me, but for the people who don't know what they're missing...

yes, it is worth it. Although, i don't understand you problem with
getting it to run. Simply format a floppy with the system, then make a
real skimpy config.sys and autoexec.bat that runs no tsr's and uses
himem.sys (and dos=high). Or, even better, use dos v6.0 and utilize
that nifty feature of multible boot up configurations! It works great,
i have a network config, games, no-ems, no-himem, and one for testing
purposes. Demos, of course, run with the no-ems one since the gus demos
don't usually need ems! :)

Have you ever HEARD MPEG audio? I've only seen a couple of MPEGS with
sound in'em but I gotta say the quality was absoultely HORRID. It was so
bad that I couldn't even tell what they were saying. And decoded just as
audio alone without the video going (which I thought might have caused the
slowdown) it was just as bad.
I don't think MPEG audio is the compression standard of the 90s. But then
these MPEGS might have just been low grade.

Well, there are two ideas I have:
1. Your new CPU is not compatible with the program. This is usually a
motherboard error because of the way the board is made which disables the
non-maskable interrupt feature. This is common in especially Acer CPU's..
there is currently a remedy underway as of now (according to Acer,
anyway).
2. The card isn't pushed into the slot all the way. :) This may seem
ridiculuous, but this is what caused me to get the error on my CPU. :)
(Well, c'mon... it's a crappy-mounted motherboard in a full-size tower)
Hehehe.. just make sure the card is plugged in snugly into the slot.

Advanced Gravis Report for July 31, 1993
6 Months Year Ago
Revenue $8,146,402.00 $4,774,314.00
Net Profit ($726,239.00) $ 42,674.00
Profit/Share ($0.05) $ 0.01
3 Months Year Ago

Net Profit ($734,588.00) $ 127,874.00
Profit/Share ($0.05) $ 0.01
(Brackets indicate losses)
It should noted also that Logitech sold 1.5 million shares on
Oct. 14 1993 to hold 1,813,637
Since then, I _think_, Logitech has sold the rest (but I'm not sure of that
one)
The latest quote on the TSE (Nov. 10) was $ 4.05 down 0.05 with 4,800 shares
traded.
The 52 week high is $ 5.63
52 week low is $ 1.56
I've been watching it lately and it's been floating at around $4.00
Maybe when the GUS MAX arrives it will spur revenues on and they can make
a profit.

A solution I have picked up from a few friends on the internet and else-

v2.10B, Address 220h, IRQ 7, DMA 1). For my settings, the synd.bat would look
like this:
@main >nul: /iirq7 /idma1 /c0
Make sure you leave out the reference to which port. Set your BLASTER environ-

These are 80ns 256Kx4 DRAMs, and they should work with the GUS. They are
fairly old (date coded work week 49 of 1989). OKI's newer parts use MSM514256
for a part number. If they don't work, it could be that the four year old
parts are page-mode rather than fast pagemode (if the GUS's timing uses
pagemode accesses). Or they might fail because the older technology typically
demands more current than newer designs. See my digest postings in V8 #5 and
#6 for a 256Kx4 DRAM vendor cross reference.
